What exactly is mulch?

According to its definition, mulch is an organic or inorganic material applied to the soil on your property. It is often used in landscape installations.

Since mulch in its definition can be both organic or inorganic material, we can easily assume that there will be or at least should be multiple kinds of mulch to choose from on the market today.

You will also find what mulch does in your search for what it is. Mulch supports your property in many ways, including:

  1. Allows your soil to absorb moisture
  2. Allows your soil to keep in moisture
  3. Blocks out weeds
  4. Reduces the volume of water runoff
  5. Leads to less of a chance of soil erosion
  6. Impacts the amount of foot traffic on your property
  7. Adds organic matter to your soil

Is there more than one kind of mulch?

As mentioned briefly before, due to being both inorganic and organic material, there is a lot of mulch on the market today. There is a wide variety of types and textures alike. Some of the more popular types of mulch sold on the market today are bark, straw, and pine.

Please remember that the type of mulch needed for you is one hundred percent reliant on your particular landscape’s specific needs and conditions. You have to consider your needs, the state, the usage, and possibly the theme or look of your landscape. If your property is in less than optimal condition, the best advice we can give you when looking for mulch is to do your research. Hiring professionals like us at Ruff and Ready Landscape Construction allows the experts to help you figure out the right mulch for you!

Help may be necessary, especially as this shortlist is not all the varieties of mulch on the market:

  • Bark
  • Seaweed
  • Pine
  • Nut Hulls
  • Straw
  • Shells
  • Cocoa Beans

These are some of the more popular options. Mulch with an incredible aroma, like cocoa beans, is slowly becoming more popular as some people are looking to add a great scent to their landscape to boost its appeal.

Crazy as it seems, types of mulch do not stop with scents. In fact, color is another option! Colored mulch complements the rest of your landscape. For example, people use a dark color mulch to contrast all the bright flowers and plant life in their flower beds and landscape to create a different look and possible theme.

Remember, the best option when choosing mulch is researching, asking questions, or hiring a professional!

Mulch Tips

What is the right way to apply mulch on my property?

Mulch is truly unmatched when it is applied the right way, in layers. The layers may range from one to three inches in thickness. This is the most acceptable option because it blocks oxygen from getting stuck between the mulch. The thick layers are beneficial to any garden or flower bed as well.

How often should I apply mulch on my lawn or landscape?

Mulch should be applied to your landscape or lawn 1-2 times annually. During the application process, you want to, at the bare minimum, use one to two inches of much, even if your lawn or landscape is in pristine shape.

You must not apply the mulch all at once! This is crucial to the health of your plant life. Too much mulch will ultimately smother your plants and could lead to their death! You need to apply your mulch in turns.

During the application process, make sure you leave a space between the base of the plant and the mulch, trees included. This will prevent disease and rotting on your plants and property.

What are the benefits of applying mulch on my lawn?

Mulch has many benefits to bring to your landscape, especially when it is applied correctly. To ensure the application is done precisely, a professional is recommended.

When the service is done correctly, here are some of the benefits you can receive:

  • Moist and Nutritious Soil
  • Limited possibility of soil erosion
  • Fewer Weeds
  • It brings bugs and insects that will benefit your landscape
  • Keeps unwanted insect, pests, and bugs away

There are plenty more benefits to get when mulching is done right! Just make sure it was done by a professional like us!
